Coal mines are a way in which we are able to remove naturally formed coal from the earth when it has been submerged under for thousands of years. They are usually very large and very deep so miners will use a specific and safe method to excavate the fossil fuel. Here are the top 3 coal mines in the world…

  1. North Antelope Rochelle, USA

Owned by Paebody Energy, this coal mine is the world’s largest coal reserve and stands in first place as the largest coal mine in the world. It is located in Wyoming and, in 2012, was estimated to contain more than 2.3 billion tonnes of coal that could be removed. It also produces one of the cleanest coals in the country.

  1. Haerwusu, China

With around 1.7 billion tonnes of removable coal in the reserve, this Chinese coal mine is the second largest in the world and the largest in China. It is owned by the Shenhau group and was developed with 1.1 billion dollars in 2008.

  1. Moatize, Mozambique

Vale, a company in Brazil, is one of the largest mining companies in the world. It also has a large shareholder in Africa’s largest coal mine, Moatize. This mine is the 4th largest in the world and holds an impressive estimate of 1.4 billion tonnes of removable coal.
